I am a painter working in the medium of photography. I have chosen the camera and color transparency film as the means of studying light, and the translation of that light into color. My work belongs to photography in that the image is a moment in time created by light captured through a lens. It is a process of looking beyond superficial appearances. I find images there I wouldn’t normally see with the human eye. There is a deconstruction of the traditional elements of 3 dimensional photographic space, focus and depth of field become sublimated into the more plastic elements of visual poetry. My work is iconic. It is about the balance between nature and abstraction. Although I visualize my images through the lens, my former background as a painter prevails in my concern for the formal elements that I find there, and the isolating and organizing of form and color for their own sake. My images create a world of spatial ambiguity where surface and reflection become suspended in a space-time of their own. The illusion of light in the transparency is translated into luminous color relationships. Images from the visual world are suspended between color and light, between the “reality” of a photograph and the “illusion” of a painting. For the last 5 years I have been printing my photographic images on inkjet printers. This process of creating a digital file from transparencies has created new possibilities for printmaking in my work as well as extreme enlargements of high resolution where the image itself can become a matrix for light to color interpretations. This is the direction my work is taking now.
